When you just can’t take the heat outside anymore don’t let it keep you from gardening. This is a great time to assess your indoor plants and give them a little attention. Here are a few tips to get you started:
- Check to see if the plant has become root-bound
Are there roots on the surface or growing out of the drainage holes? Turn the pot on it’s side and gently ease the plant out of the pot. Are the roots coiled around the sides or bottom? If you answered yes to either, it is time to re-pot. See the potting tips below. - Assess the overall health of the plant
If your plant doesn’t seem happy, try to figure out what might be bothering it. Has it been re-potted in the last 2 years? The soil might be exhausted of nutrients and it might need to be re-potted. Is it too wet or too dry? Check for excess water in a cachepot or saucer and consider watering less if you find it. If the soil is dry and crumbly then it probably needs a bit more water. Is it getting the right amount of light? - Check for insects
If you find any insects crawling around on your plant, try to capture one we can help you choose the right product to eradicate it. Look for insects on the inside of dead branches too. - Pinch and Prune
If a philodendron or other plant is looking leggy, pinch or cut back the branches to encourage branching. The cuttings can sometimes be used to start new plants.
Prune any dead branches, leaves or blooms. - Give them a Bath
Wipe large smooth leaves with a clean damp cloth. Brush hairy-leafed plants, like African Violets with a dry, soft brush. Fine-foliage plants can be put in a tub, shower or outside and sprayed gently to remove dirt. - Potting Tips
Choose a pot 2 inches wider and deeper than the existing pot and a nutrient rich potting soil. Give the plant a while to adjust before fertilizing because roots that were disturbed during re-potting are susceptible to root burn.
Also, remember that we are happy to help you choose a new pot and re-pot a plant for you. If your plant is small enough to carry, bring it in and we will help you get it looking it’s best.
